Statutory + complementary insurance reimbursement Premium implants detailed Secteur 2 OPTAM · Article 53
The essentials in 3 points: 1) The surgical package is covered by Assurance Maladie and your complementary health plan. 2) A surgeon’s fee supplement applies, starting at €500 per eye. 3) The choice of implant may add a further out-of-pocket cost, from €0 (standard monofocal) to about €450 (premium multifocal).

Understanding the cost in 3 steps

Cataract surgery breaks down into three independent items. Each item has its own reimbursement scheme.

1

Surgical package

Operating room rental, phacoemulsification, consumables, local anaesthesia, post-operative care.

Covered
Assurance Maladie (70% of the statutory rate) + complementary plan (up to 100%)
2

Fee supplement

Surgeon’s free-rate fees (Secteur 2 OPTAM): consultation, surgical procedure, personalised follow-up, medical liability.

Starting at €500 / eye
Supplement partly covered by certain complementary plans (the “fee supplement” line item)
3

Intraocular implant

Choice of implant suited to your lifestyle: monofocal, extended depth of focus (EDOF) or multifocal.

€0 to €454 / eye
Net out-of-pocket cost, after deducting the €95 reimbursed by Sécurité sociale (LPPR rate)

Sécurité sociale + complementary plan coverage: what is covered

Cataract surgery is fully reimbursed by Assurance Maladie for the procedure and hospital package portion (CCAM code: BFGA004: removal of the lens with implantation). Your complementary health plan covers the remaining share. Assurance Maladie also reimburses €95 for any intraocular implant listed in the LPPR (the official list of reimbursable products and services).

Your out-of-pocket cost therefore comes down to two items only: the surgeon’s fee supplement (Secteur 2 OPTAM) and any supplement linked to the choice of a premium implant.

Choosing your implant: 3 families, 3 uses

The choice of implant depends on your lifestyle, your visual expectations and anatomical features (astigmatism, axial length, etc.). An optical trial and a simulation are carried out before surgery.

Monofocal

A single focal plane

Corrects one distance (most often far vision). Glasses needed for near vision.

€0 / eye for the spherical version
  • Full reimbursement by statutory + complementary insurance
  • Excellent optical quality
  • Toric version (astigmatism): €84 to €111 / eye
EDOF

Extended depth of focus

Continuous vision from far to intermediate distances (screen, dashboard). Glasses still useful for fine print.

≈ €405 / eye
  • Excellent quality / comfort trade-off
  • Very few night-time halos
  • Recommended for driving and screens
Multifocal

Near + far + intermediate vision

Maximum independence from glasses, including for reading.

€378 to €454 / eye
  • Near-total optical autonomy
  • Neuro-visual adaptation phase of a few weeks
  • May produce mild halos at night

Your complementary health plan may cover a significant share

Several lines of your contract may apply. Here is how to find your way around them.

📄 Fee supplement

Check the “surgical hospitalisation” line or the “surgeon’s fee supplement” line (sometimes labelled “fee overrun” on older contracts). Common coverage: 100% to 300% of the statutory base rate.

👁️ Premium implant

Some high-end complementary plans (optical “implant allowance”) offer €300 to €600 per eye toward multifocal or EDOF implants. Ask about this explicitly.

📞 Prior estimate

We provide a detailed estimate after the pre-operative consultation, to be sent to your complementary plan in order to obtain a written estimate of its coverage.

💡 Tax tip

Medical costs that remain payable by you may, in certain cases, be deductible (Loi Madelin, self-employed status): to be confirmed with your adviser.

Frequently asked questions about cataract pricing

How much will I pay in total for both eyes?

The total depends on the implant chosen and on your complementary plan. Example with a spherical monofocal implant (Eye Cee One or Asphina) and a plan that covers 100% of fee supplements: about €1,000 for both eyes (fee supplement only). Example with a multifocal implant and a plan without supplement coverage: about €1,800 to €2,000 for both eyes (€500/eye in fees + €400 to €500/eye for the multifocal implant supplement). We provide a detailed written estimate during the consultation.

Why is there a fee supplement if the surgery is reimbursed?

Dr Tourabaly is contracted under Secteur 2 OPTAM (free-rate fees with a commitment to moderate pricing, allowing better reimbursement by Assurance Maladie and most complementary plans). Sécurité sociale reimburses the procedure based on the Secteur 1 rate (about €271 for a cataract). The fee supplement, starting at €500 per eye, pays for the personalised examination, close follow-up, expertise and medical liability of the surgeon. This supplement complies with Article 53 of the Code of Medical Ethics: displayed transparently, “with tact and restraint”.

Is a monofocal implant enough?

For many patients, yes. Modern monofocal implants (Eye Cee One, Asphina, Eyehance DIB, Envista Aspire) offer excellent optical quality for distance vision. Glasses remain necessary for fine reading. If you wish to be free of glasses for most of your activities (reading, screens, driving), an EDOF or multifocal implant will be more suitable: but the decision is made during the consultation, after analysing your eye and your lifestyle.

How does the €95 reimbursed by Sécurité sociale on the implant work?

Any intraocular implant listed in the LPPR (official list of reimbursable products and services) qualifies for a flat reimbursement of €95 from Sécurité sociale. The prices shown in our schedule are already net of this reimbursement: the price indicated is your actual out-of-pocket cost for the implant item. No unpleasant surprises.

Can the estimate change between the consultation and the surgery?

No. The written estimate provided at the pre-operative consultation is firm. Only a change on your part (for example, if you ultimately choose a different implant) can alter the price. In that case, a new estimate is drawn up.

Can both eyes be operated on the same day?

The usual practice is to operate on each eye a few days or weeks apart, as a precaution (to check for the absence of complications before treating the second eye and to allow the brain to adapt). The price applies per eye for the fee and the implant; the clinic hospital package is also charged twice.

What if I have astigmatism in addition to my cataract?

A so-called “toric” implant corrects the cataract and the astigmatism at the same time. Toric models are available in every category (monofocal, EDOF, multifocal). The additional cost compared with a spherical implant is indicated in the price schedule above.

Let’s discuss your case

A full pre-operative consultation allows us to confirm the indication, choose the right implant and provide you with a personalised written estimate.

Disclaimer. This article is for informational purposes. The prices indicated are those charged by Dr Moïse Tourabaly (Secteur 2 OPTAM, free-rate fees) at the Clinique Sainte-Geneviève (Paris 14) as of the update date (April 2026). A full pre-operative assessment is essential to confirm the therapeutic indication, the choice of implant and the price applicable to your case. A personalised ophthalmological opinion remains essential for any therapeutic decision.
