LASIK, PKR, SMILE or ICL: which technique?
Four ways to correct myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism and do without glasses. None is “better” in absolute terms: the choice depends on your eye and your priorities. Compare them below.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| For whom | Moderate myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, with sufficient corneal thickness. | Same conditions, but thinner cornea or a job/sport with risk of impact. | Mainly myopia (± astigmatism), cornea to be preserved. | High myopia/hyperopia, or a cornea too thin for laser. |
| Principle / procedure | A thin flap is lifted, the laser reshapes the stroma, the flap is repositioned. | The laser removes the epithelium then reshapes the surface (all-laser); a bandage contact lens is applied. | The laser cuts a lenticule, removed through a 2–4 mm incision. | A soft implant is slid behind the iris, without removing any tissue. |
| Recovery | Very fast — clear vision in 24–48 h. | Slower — 4 to 7 days, vision stable within a few weeks. | Fast — a few days. | Fast — 1 to 2 days. |
| Pain / comfort | Well tolerated, mild discomfort for a few hours. | Marked discomfort for 3–5 days (while the surface heals over). | Well tolerated, mild discomfort. | Well tolerated, mild discomfort. |
| Durability / reversibility | Permanent; enhancement possible. | Permanent. | Permanent. | Permanent but reversible: the implant can be removed or replaced. |
| Vision targeted | Distance (and near with monovision / presbyLASIK). | Distance (and near with monovision). | Distance. | Distance. |
| Main risks | Temporary dryness, halos; flap complications (rare). | Initial discomfort, transient corneal haze (rare). | Less dryness; somewhat more limited range of corrections. | Intraocular surgery (rare infection); monitoring of eye pressure. |

| Recommended if… | you want an ultra-fast recovery and your cornea allows it. | your cornea is thin or you practise a contact sport. | you are myopic and prefer a minimally invasive mini-incision. | your myopia is high or your cornea is too thin for laser. |

The right choice is decided during consultation, after a complete assessment (topography, corneal thickness, pupil, refractive error to correct). Several techniques may be suitable: your priorities — speed, comfort, reversibility — often make the difference.

Frequently asked questions about prices
Why is refractive surgery not reimbursed?
The French state health insurance (Sécurité sociale) considers correction by laser or phakic implant to be “elective” surgery (not essential to health). Private health insurers (mutuelles), however, often offer a dedicated allowance. Remember to check the “refractive surgery” or “optical” section of your policy, and ask for the itemised quote that we will provide after the consultation.
Why is there a price difference between PKR, LASIK, SMILE and PresbyLASIK?
The price reflects the technical complexity and the laser time required. SMILE and PresbyLASIK call for specific lasers and more precise settings. PKR, although it requires longer follow-up, uses a surface laser technique that is less costly in consumables. The choice is never made on price, but on the medical indication.
Can the price change after the consultation?
No. The quote drawn up during the consultation is firm and final. If the assessment shows that a simpler technique is sufficient, you benefit from the lower price. If, on the contrary, a more complex technique is recommended, the corresponding price will be explained and you remain free to decide.
What is the difference between “clinic package” and “surgeon’s fees”?
The clinic package covers the hire of the operating theatre, the use of the laser, the nursing staff and the consumables. Dr Tourabaly’s fees pay for the surgical act, the medical responsibility, the consultations and the post-operative follow-up. These are two separate invoices that your private health insurer may assess individually according to its cover schedule.
What happens if an enhancement is needed?
About 2 to 5% of patients have an enhancement within the first 6 months. It is included in the initial package (excluding any operating-theatre charges) provided it is indicated by the surgeon and the conditions are met (stable correction, follow-up respected, no trauma).
Can I get a quote before the consultation?
The prices shown on this page are the prices applied. The personalised quote is drawn up at the practice once the technical indication is confirmed by the assessment. To speed things up, feel free to take our 2-minute eligibility test before booking an appointment.
