Cataract surgery in Paris: expertise and technology
Cataract is the leading cause of declining vision after age 60. It affects more than 20% of people over 65 and is characterized by a progressive clouding of the lens, the eye’s natural lens. Cataract surgery is the most frequently performed procedure in France, with more than 800,000 procedures per year — and one of the safest, with a success rate above 98%.
Dr Moïse Tourabaly, former Chef de Clinique at the Quinze-Vingts and former Hospital-University Assistant at the Sorbonne, has been performing cataract surgery in Paris for more than 15 years. He consults at the Diabet’ Paris 13 (Paris 13) and operates at the Clinique Laser Victor Hugo (Paris 16) and the Clinique Sainte-Geneviève (Paris 14).
Phacoemulsification: the reference technique
Dr Tourabaly performs phacoemulsification, a modern surgical technique that fragments and aspirates the clouded lens using ultrasound through a 2.2 mm micro-incision, without sutures. An artificial lens (intraocular implant) is then injected into the capsular bag. The procedure lasts 10 to 20 minutes per eye, as an outpatient procedure, under local anesthesia with eye drops.
Premium implants: choosing your vision
Monofocal
Sharp vision at one distance (far or near). Covered by national health insurance. Excellent distance vision quality; reading glasses required.
EDOF
Extended depth of focus. Sharp distance + intermediate vision (screen, kitchen). Excellent compromise, fewer halos than a multifocal.
Multifocal
Sharp vision at all distances. Goal: freedom from glasses. Nighttime halos possible, adaptation required. Ideal for active patients.
Toric
Corrects astigmatism in addition to cataract. Available in monofocal, EDOF or multifocal versions. Essential if astigmatism > 1 D.
Cataract and diabetes: dedicated expertise in Paris 13
Diabetic patients develop cataract earlier and more frequently. Surgery is entirely feasible but requires precautions: optimized glycemic control (HbA1c < 8%), enhanced retinal monitoring, and a suitable implant choice. Dr Tourabaly, who consults at the Diabet’ Paris 13 in Paris 13, has particular expertise in this combined management of diabetes + ophthalmology. Coordination with the Hub’s diabetologists supports optimal overall follow-up.
Recovery after cataract surgery
- Day 1 — Mandatory check-up. Vision improved by the next day. Eye drops for 4 weeks.
- Week 1 — Resume driving and activities. Excellent distance vision.
- Month 1 — Stabilized result. Success rate > 98%. Prescription of reading glasses if monofocal implant.
- The second eye is operated on 1 to 4 weeks after the first.
Where do the procedures take place?
Cataract surgeries are performed at:
• Clinique Sainte-Geneviève — 29 rue Sarrette, 75014 Paris (clinique-sainte-genevieve.fr)
The preoperative assessment takes place at the Cachan or Paris 13 office.
Cataract care rooted in the 13th arrondissement
The office serving the south-east Paris area is located in the 13th arrondissement, near Place d’Italie and Avenue d’Italie. This anchor point makes access easier for patients from the Gobelins, Tolbiac, Butte-aux-Cailles and Chevaleret neighborhoods, but also from the bordering arrondissements — the 5th (Quartier Latin, Gobelins), the 12th (Bercy, Nation) and the 14th (Montparnasse, Alésia) — as well as from the neighboring towns of Val-de-Marne (Le Kremlin-Bicêtre, Gentilly, Ivry-sur-Seine). The Place d’Italie station, served by metro lines 5, 6 and 7, is the main convergence point; several bus lines complete the service.
Dr Tourabaly welcomes all new patients, without restriction, whether for a first consultation or a second opinion. Appointments are booked online via Doctolib.
This transport network is a practical factor for cataract surgery: the procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and being accompanied by a relative is recommended on the day of surgery, as the operated eye is protected by a shield for the first few hours.
Your journey, from consultation to surgery
Care unfolds in several clearly separated stages, which allows each step to be carried out in the most suitable location:
- Consultation and diagnosis — at the Paris 13 or Cachan office. Dr Tourabaly confirms the cataract diagnosis, assesses its impact on vision and rules out associated conditions (retina, optic nerve).
- Preoperative assessment and biometry — the eye measurements (keratometry, axial length) used to calculate the implant power are performed at the Cachan office, equipped with a dedicated biometer. This step determines the choice of the implant best suited to your vision.
- Surgical procedure — at the Clinique Sainte-Geneviève (Paris 14), a surgical facility dedicated to eye surgery. Cataract surgery is not performed at the Paris 13 office, which is reserved for consultations and follow-up.
- Postoperative follow-up — a check-up is carried out at Day 2 or Day 6 depending on the case, at the local office.
This organization separates the consultation location (close to your home) from the surgical facility (equipped for phacoemulsification). For patients living in southern Paris and the neighboring arrondissements (5th, 12th, 14th), the diagnostic consultation takes place at the office (Paris 13 or Cachan) and the biometry at Cachan; only the surgery takes place at the Clinique Sainte-Geneviève (Paris 14).
